"A bodily disease, which we look upon as whole and entire within itself, may, after all, be but a symptom of some ailment in the spiritual past." Mark Twain

Life is a sacred journey involving change, growth, and self-discovery. Throughout life, one needs to seek knowledge continually to expand  one's vision and stretch one's soul in order to stay healthy. Spiritual health creates an environment for that sacred journey. Spirituality provides meaning and direction for life's sojourn. Essentially, spiritual health is composed of positive morals of mindfulness for compassion, hope, and love of self and others, as well as of positive values of faith, forgiveness, and integrity, among others.

Are you healthy? Do you always focus on self rather than on others?

The illusion that we are separated from the rest of life is inherent in most of us. Our thoughts create this illusion of separateness - an hindrance to spirituality. But this illusion not only keeps us separated from our true selves but also engenders aloofness between ourselves and others.

Preoccupation with self may make you acquire a "mine is better" attitude, culminating in the "I am special" belief - a stumbling block to spirituality, which requires you to embrace others as a human being in order to live in harmony with anyone who shares our humanity.

Dailai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, can always relate instantly to people of different cultures, religions, and perspectives because, to him, any individual is no more than just another fellow human being with the same desire to be happy, just as he is. Mindfulness is spirituality.

Are you healthy? Do you practice loving kindness towards others?

Loving kindness is mindfulness of others. As opposed to self-love, it is selfless love as the fundamental path to happiness and spiritual health.

Loving kindness begins with gratitude. If you are grateful for what you have, you are more willing to share your blessings with others through loving kindness.
Are you healthy? Do you love material things?

According to to Buddha, attachment to material things is the source of human suffering.

Attachment comes in the form of craving (wanting things one does not have), aversion (having things one does not want), and ignorance (delusional preoccupation with the wanting and not knowing the futility of the wanting).

Non-attachment is not about self-denial: it is about the wisdom of knowing the impermanence of material things, and therefore the non-attachment to them. Self-awakening, or nirvana in Buddhism, is a moment of clarity, in which one comes face to face with who one really is - it is a moment of ultimate truth of self.

According to Socrates, the Greek philosopher, human happiness could be achieved only by limiting the needs of man. Distinguish between what you need and what you want.

Simplify your life: clear away the physical clutters in your living environment as the first step to free yourself from material and mundane clutters that may impair spirituality and damage spiritual health.
Are you healthy? Do you have a purpose life?

Focus your soul on spirituality or more spiritual things, such as mindfulness of compassion and loving kindness for others. Learn to look within yourself for answers to your life problems: you will become more self-reliant and self-sufficient. Then, you may find the inner voice: what you love to do, and what touches your heart and soul. Your inner self knows the truth when you hear it.

Having a purpose life, whatever that may be, is conducive to psychological health, and can be important to physical health as well. According to a study conducted at Rush University Medical College in Chicago, "if you find purpose in life, if you find your life is meaningful, and if you have goal-directed behavior, you are likely to live longer."
