Are you healthy? Do you have mental depression?
Mental depression is both a physical and psychological disorder, as a result of biological susceptibility and an accumulation of life stresses. Biological suceptibility refers to a heightened sensibility to changes in the levels of certain brain chemicals - specifically, neurotransmitters, which regulate appetite, energy, mood, and sleep.
Diet plays an important role in mental depression. Your brain needs magnesium (which is responsible for neurotransmission), calcium (which optimizes the absorption of magnesium), Omega 3 fatty acids (which enhances blood circulation), vitamin B complex (which improves the nervous system). A diet rich in whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes (magnesium), salmon and sardines (Omega 3 fatty acids), wheat germs (vitamin B complex) improves overall mental health. Changing your diet may alleveiate your mental depression symptoms.
Antidepressants may alter the levels of brain chemicals, but they do not change perceptions or behavior patterns - which play a pivotal part in mental depression. In addition, all pharmaceutical drugs are chemicals, and therefore have long-term side effects on physical health.
You may have an overactive deep limbic system that generates automatic negative thoughts (ANT). If that is the case, rethink your thinking: changing your moment-to-momnent thought patterns to change your distorted thinking, thereby helping you overcome your mental depression.
Remember the following "don'ts" about mental depression:
Are you healthy? Do you have insomnia? Do you always have natural sleep?
Natural sleep is a basic human need for optimum health. During natural sleep, many of your body's major organs and regulatory systems continue to work actively, including your brain. For example, during natural sleep, human growth hormone (HGH) is secreted, which stimulates tissue and liver regeneration, maintains the immune system, and helps convert fat to muscle. Sleep deprivation and insomnia have been shown to alter the daily rhythms of several hormones involved in reproduction and fertility: sleep disturbances may contribute to infertility.
Read "Sleep Deprivation" and 'Natural Sleep the Oriental Way" by Stephen Lau.
In aromatherapy, lavender essential oil is inhaled, added to a hot bath, or used in massage to induce deep relaxation and enhance natural sleep.
In hydrotherapy (all forms of water), water is used not only to cleanse, but also to revitalize through improved circulation, and hence promoting natural sleep.

Don't use alcohol to fight mental depression, because alcohol is a depressant that will drag you further into the dumps of mental depression.
|
| ˇ |
Don't use food to overcome mental depression, because the so-called "comfort food" will not comfort you: it will only reinforce your guilt and poor self-image. It may lead to eating disorders.
|
| ˇ |
Don't use spending sprees to get you out of a mental depression, because it will only make you feel guilty for buying the things you don't need with the money you don't have. |
Are you healthy? Do you have anxiety attacks?
Anxiety attacks are normal reactions to a threatening situation: they are natural "fight or flight" responses to stress. Anxiety attacks are often accompanied by distrubing bodily sensations, resulting from the prolonged strain of mind and body being on constant alert.
Anxiety attacks may impair the immune system, contribute to high blood pressure and irritable bowel syndrome.
Lack of exercise, muscle tension, and overbreathing (irregular, rapid, and shallow breathing from the upper chest instead of the diaphragm) can trigger anxiety attacks.
Regular massage using lavender essential oil or Roman chamomile oil (not during pregnancy) may relieve muscle tension and reduce stress and anxiety attacks.
Are you healthy? Do you have stress?
Stress is often manifested in aggression, anger, breathing problems, excess sweating, chronic fatigue, headache, indigestion, irritability, memory loss, irritability, and poor concentration. Stress is often a precursor to autoimmune diseases. By accelerating breathing, elevating blood pressure, and concstricting blood flow, stress is also the culprit of heart diseases. Even cancer can be affected by stressed emotions.
The major causes of stress are:
| ˇ |
Financial problems: unemployment, debt, not making both ends meet
|
| ˇ |
Health problems: two-thirds of family doctor visits related to stress
|
| ˇ |
Relationship problems: breakups and divorces; teenager problems; aging problems
|
| ˇ |
Work-related problems: career problems; work environment problems; racial discrimination and sexual harassment |
Stress is based on perceptions: it is an individual's attitude or a presonal reaction to certain events in life. What is stressful to you may not be stressful to others.
Perceptions of stress are based on the following:
| ˇ |
Care and value: the more you care about something, the more stressful it is to you.
|
| ˇ |
Choices and options: the more choices and options open to you, the less stressed you are.
|
| ˇ |
Conscientiousness: the more conscientious you are, the more stressed you may become.
|
| ˇ |
Enjoyment: the more you enjoy doing something, the less stressful it is to you.
|
| ˇ |
Responsibility: the more you are responsible for a stresful situation, the more stressful it is to you. |
